Director of Pharmacy, Acute HospitalOperations

The Director of Pharmacy will be stationed and work alongside of Methodist Healthcare Pharmacy and Facility Administration for HCA's Northeast Methodist Hospital. 
Job Summary – Plans, organizes, controls, andsupervises activities in hospital pharmacy according to hospital policies,standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. Recommendsinnovations in the practice and function of the hospital pharmacy to Administrationand carries out mutually agreed upon programs.
Supervisor – Division Director of Pharmacy
Supervises – All Pharmacy Personnel
Duties (includedbut not limited to):
•        Establishes quality improvement, fiscal, productivity, and patient satisfactiongoals and objectives in conjunction with upper management.
•        Supervises the maintenance and dissemination of drug informationthrough in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients,hospital staff, and medical staff.
•        Actively assists staff pharmacists in the discharge of routing dutiesas necessary.
•        Directs the activities of and provides professional and technicalguidance to pharmacy personnel.
•        Exercises professional judgment in imparting therapeutic and druginformation to patients and health professionals.
•        Communicates the Hospital and Mission and Philosophy to departmentemployees and integrates with departmental operations.
•        Provides leadership to new program development, implementation andevaluation. Acts as a consultant in areas of expertise.
•        Anticipates the needs and issues of customers/suppliers in order toinsure effective departmental operations and/or meet their needs.
•        Promotes teamwork among staff, peers, physicians, and others.
•        Promotes multi-disciplinary teamwork in order to meet theorganization’s goals and objectives.
•        Is responsible for department planning, goals, and objectives that areconsistent with the Hospital and Pharmacy Shared Services.
•        Provides leadership to the department through effective organization,direction of activities, and appropriate delegation of functions.
•        Maintains appropriate controls of department functions to insuresmooth, effective operations.
•        Continuously evaluates the quality of services and/or productsprovided to the department’s customers.
•        Monitors and assists with the collection, documentation, and reportingof quality assessment and improvement data.
•        Ensures that department is in compliance with JCAHO requirements, DrugEnforcement Administration, State Board of Pharmacy, hospital policies andprocedures, and other Federal and State regulations.
•        Ensures that department is in compliance with all applicable safetyand security practices, infection control policies, fire and safety anddisaster planning.
•        Is responsible for development and implementation of Departmentspecific policy and procedures.
•        Establishes job performance standards, functions, responsibilities andthe qualifications of department employees.
•        Is responsible for the effective recruitment, selection, orientation,promotion, evaluation, retention and termination of department employees.
•        Determines the competence of department employees.
•        Routinely assesses departmental education needs and provides theappropriate learning experiences, ie. on the job training, workshop, in  services, etc.
•        Actively participates in Hospital committees, task forces, projects,and provides leadership as assigned.
•        Represents Hospital and Pharmacy Shared Services through activeparticipation in outside activities and organizations. Practice and adhere tothe “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”.
•        Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills& Abilities
•        Knowledgeable and proficient in the legal responsibilities of thepharmacist to the facility and all state and federal laws and regulationsgoverning pharmacy services.
•        Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria,pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics as well as the use and application ofnew medications and technology.
•        Problem solving ability and analytical thinking required.
•        Organization – Proactively prioritized needs and effectively managesresources.
•        Communication – Able to communicate (verbal and written) clearly andeffectively to other health care providers including pharmacists, physiciansand nurses. Fosters team environment by providing clinical education, support,training to staff members. Able to effectively participate on interdisciplinaryteams and committees.
•        Leadership – Guides individuals and groups toward desired outcomes,setting high performance standards and delivering quality services.
•        Customer orientation – Establishes and maintains long-term customerrelationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceedingexpectations. Able to work with diverse work force.
•        Policies and Procedures – Articulates knowledge and understanding oforganizational policies, procedures and systems.
•        PC Skills – Experience using computer applications including wordprocessing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems required.
•        Financial management – Applies tools and processes to successfullymanage drug cost budget. Able to direct cost- effective drug therapy viaclinical protocols.
•        Project management – Able to assess work activities and allocateresources appropriately. Able to work independently and handle stressappropriately.
•        Tactical execution – Able to develop policies and procedures forpharmaceutical services.
B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy
Minimum of 2 years supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
CurrentPharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board ofPharmacy.
Current Consultant Pharmacist license in good standing with theappropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
*With Parallon & Hospital leadershipapproval, incumbents relocating from another State will be given 6-months toobtain State licensure and Consultant license (if applicable) for the State inwhich the facility is located. During this timeframe, the DOP will onlyparticipate in administrative functions and another licensed pharmacist will begiven responsibility as the hospital’s Pharmacist in Charge and ConsultantPharmacist (if applicable).
PHYSICALDEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS – Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching.Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate akeyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.Walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) often necessary.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilitiesto perform the essential functions. Occasionally is subject to irregularhours and occasional work pressure due to multiple calls, tasks and inquiries.
CRITICALDEMANDS - Abilityto work independently and handle stress appropriately. Ability to work,cooperatively with other members of HCA, hospital and pharmacy staff. Abilityto handle multiple tasks, and adapt to changes in
workload and work schedule. Ability to set priorities,make critical decisions, and respond to client concerns. Fosters a teamenvironment by providing orientation and training to directors of pharmacy andpharmacy staff. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
OSHA CATEGORY – The normal work routine involves no exposureto blood, body fluids, or tissues (although situations can be imagined orhypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposureto body fluids).
