Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES – Plans, organizes, controls, and supervises activities for the market hospital pharmacy departments according to hospital policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. Recommends innovations in the practice and function of the hospital pharmacy to hospital and Division leadership and executes on mutually agreed upon programs.
Establishes a continuous quality improvement model, fiscal, productivity, employee and patient satisfaction goals and objectives in conjunction with hospital and division leadership.
Supervises the maintenance and dissemination of drug information through in-service education of hospital personnel, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff.
Actively assists staff pharmacists in the discharge of routine duties as necessary.
Acts as Liaison for assigned facilities with physicians, Quality, Risk Management, hospital Department Directors, Hospital and Division leadership.
Directs the activities of and provides professional and technical guidance to pharmacy personnel which includes but is not limited to routinely assessing departmental education needs and provides the appropriate learning experiences.
Exercises professional judgment in imparting therapeutic and drug information to patients and health professionals.
Communicates the Hospital and Mission and Philosophy to department employees and integrates with departmental operations.
Provides leadership to new program development, implementation, evaluation and acts as a consultant in areas of expertise.
Anticipates and meets the needs and resolves issues of customers/suppliers in order to ensure effective departmental operations.
Promotes multi-disciplinary teamwork in order to meet the organization’s goals and objectives.
Is responsible and accountable for Pharmacy department planning, goals, and objectives that are consistent with both Hospitals, and Pharmacy Shared Services.
Provides leadership to both Pharmacy departments through effective organization, direction of activities, and appropriate delegation of functions.
Ensures that department is in compliance with JCAHO requirements, Drug Enforcement Administration, State Board of Pharmacy, hospital policies and procedures, and other Federal and State regulations.
Ensures Pharmacy departments are in compliance with all applicable safety and security practices, infection control policies, fire and safety and disaster planning.
Responsible and accountable for development and implementation of Department specific policy and procedures.
Establishes job performance standards, functions, responsibilities and the qualifications of department employees.
Responsible and accountable for the effective recruitment, selection, orientation, coaching, promotion, evaluation, retention and disciplinary of department employees.
Actively participates, or assigns delegate for Hospital committees, task forces, and projects.
Actively participates in Hospital and Pharmacy Shared Services projects and meetings which may include participating in outside activities and organizations.

Job Requirements

B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy.
Minimum of 2 years supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE – Current pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology.
Leadership, administrative, and human resource skills required which includes problem solving, conflict management and analytical thinking skills.
Demonstrates ability to effectively participate and lead interdisciplinary teams and committees.
Business acumen including profit/loss understanding, contract negotiations, and GPO function required.
Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics.
Organization – proactively prioritized needs and effectively manages resources
Communication – Able to communicate (verbal, listening and written) clearly and effectively to other health care providers including pharmacists, physicians and nurses. Fosters team environment by providing clinical education, support, training to staff members
Leadership – guides individuals and groups toward desired outcomes, setting high performance standards and delivering quality services
Customer orientation – establishes and maintains long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations. Able to work with diverse work force
Policies and Procedures – articulates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems
PC Skills – experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems required.
Financial management – applies tools and processes to successfully manage drug cost budget. Able to direct cost-effective drug therapy via clinical protocols
Project management – Able to assess work activities and allocate resources appropriately. Able to work independently and handle stress appropriately

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS – Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of a computer keyboard). May require lifting and carrying light loads (e.g., boxes, equipment, laptop, computer). CRITICAL DEMANDS - Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately. Ability to work cooperatively with other members of HCA, hospital and pharmacy staff. Ability to handle multiple tasks, and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond to client concerns. Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to directors of pharmacy and pharmacy staff. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials, hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions. Use specialized protective equipment or clothing). Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used
