Job Summary– The COE Pharmacy supervisor is responsible for monitoring, evaluating and making recommendations to assure the appropriate and effectiveuse of pharmaceuticals for patient care. The COE supervisor shallensure that all COE pharmacists are using the medication processto assess, plan, intervene when necessary, implement and evaluate patientcare in compliance with client hospital and COE policies,protocols and procedures.

Supervises Centralized Order Entry Pharmacists
Duties (included but not limited to):
  • These are the tasks the incumbent must be able to perform. Consideration should be given to identifying the end resultsof the duty which can be used inevaluating the performance of the incumbent. Ideally limit the numberof duties to ten or less.
  • Oversee all operations and coordinates workflowof the Centralized Order Entry Area
  • Serve as pharmacist in charge for state licensure purposesif required
  • Assist in interviewing and hiring of COE pharmacists
  • Assists in the orientation and training of the COE pharmacists
  • Ensures all policiesand procedures are adheredto by the pharmacy staff
  • Assists in preparation of the Key Performance Indicator report
  • Prepares the monthlyCOE DOR
  • Prepares schedule for COE pharmacists
  • Assist in the tracking and trendingof all medication errors, performance metrics, and quality standards related to the COE
  • Provide patient care activities to ensuresafe and effective drug therapy
  • Be of serviceto patients, physicians, nursesand other pharmacists
  • Maintain and improve job knowledge, skills and competence
  • Perform duties in accordance with specific standards of care as evidenced by completion of competency skills checklist
  • Articulate daily activities that supportcontinuous quality improvement of patient care
  • Prepare written or oral reportat change of shift to communicate incomplete assignments and potential patientsafety concerns to monitorin order to ensure continuity of medication therapy if required
  • Demonstrate knowledge and mastery of requiredjob functions, internal communications and operating systems
  • Accurately enter orders in the computer in a timely manner
  • Support and assist in meeting departmental goals for order entry and clinical programs
  • Ensure facility procedures are followedwhen non-formulary drugs,target drugs, restricted drugs and investigational drugs are ordered
  • Initiate change in assignments based on workload and resources available
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computerorder entry and related computer functions
  • Screen for drug interactions, allergies, order duplications, appropriate diagnosis, renal and liver functionprior to order entry
  • Assure facility queues are addressed in a timelymanner
  • Investigate and report adversedrug events and medication incidents
  • Facilitate dissemination of drug information in a timely mannerto achieve high quality,cost effective, positive therapeutic outcomeswhen consulted
  • Review and interpretall physician ordersreceived, using the patient profile
  • Monitor for incompatibilities, concentration and rate on intravenous drugs
  • Participate in the maintenance of continuous qualityimprovement program
  • Assist in the development and review of COE protocols
  • Document clinical interventions and follow-upwhen indicated

  • Policies and Procedures – articulates knowledgeand understanding of department and client facilitypolicies, procedures and systems
  • Administrative Skills – answer telephones, researchinformation, utilize drug resources

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Three (3) years hospital experience preferred
  • Meditech operating system
  • Appropriate state licensure
Physical demands/working conditions Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stoopingand stretching.Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operatea keyboard, photocopier, telephone,calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesightto record, prepareand communicate appropriate reports. Requires lifting papers or boxes up to 25pounds occasionally. Work is an office environment. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Staff must remain flexible and available to provide staffingassistance for any/all disasteror emergencysituations.
Oshacategory – The normal work routine involves no exposureto blood, body fluids,or tissues (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under whichanyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Personswho perform these dutiesare not called upon as part of their employment to performor assistin emergency care or first aid, or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
